Grow your calves at home So many people think it can’t be done. Our calves are genetic and there is nothing we can do about it. Today we are going to talk a little bit about genetics, but the main reason your calves aren’t growing is either one you aren’t training them or two your not using the two main ways we need to train them in order to get complete development. The two main muscles we want to work when building our calves are the gastrocnemius which has 2 heads, the medial is on the inside of our calf and lateral head is on the outside. The soleus is the second muscle and it is a large muscle that is underneath the gastrocnemius. We mainly emphasize the gastrocnemius. On most people, this muscle has a fairly even split between fast and slow-twitch fibres meaning it will benefit from both higher rep training and some low rep heavy work. If you haven’t been training your calves a good place to start is on a step. I would use bodyweight at first. Focusing on a full range of motion you want to go slow and really feel the stretch in the bottom position sometimes it takes a few reps before you can get that full stretch, then go up into the top position and get right up on your toes so that the balls of your feet are above the step. Since we are on the bottom step we might as well start working our way up. The staircase in my house has 15 steps and I do 5 reps on each leg alternating from one leg to the other. Once I’ve completed 5 on each side I move up to the next step and repeat until I reach the top of the stair for a total of 75 reps per side. This can be repeated every other day allowing for a recovery day in between. When you start to add weight make sure you are still doing a full range of motion at a slower pace because you can move some pretty impressive weight through a part range, but you will be denying yourself of complete development. If for some reason you have absolutely no steps in your house. you can do a leaning single leg calf raise. These are better than standing straight while doing a calf raises as the lean provides a better stretch. Making the movement more effective and the leaning position makes me think of the drive phase of a sprint. Anytime you can work a muscle in the position it is going to be used is always a plus. Before we go into some great exercises for the soleus, I want to talk about an old school exercise for the calves that we’ve seen lots of pictures of Arnold doing with one, two and sometimes even three people on this back and that is the donkey calf raise. I wouldn’t recommend having people sit on your back to start. But what makes this exercise so good is when you bend forward with your waist at a ninety to your legs while keeping you legs perpendicular to the floor it creates an even greater stretch in the calves then a standing calf raise. Straight leg calf raises are a must for working the gastrocnemius muscle but are not the best way to work the soleus this muscle responds better to bent knee exercises like seated calf raises, so we need to have both a straight leg version and a bent knee variation in order to have complete calf development. Now we are just going to take a second to talk about genetics because the soleus is a muscle that responds better to high rep training with around 89% of the muscle fibres typically being slow twitch. Which don’t grow as well as fast-twitch fibres, but they still grow. Some people are blessed by the gods of great calves with a higher ratios of fast-twitch fibre than others who are just born with long thin calves and more slow-twitch fibres limiting how much growth you can achieve but they still will grow. Another bent knee variation you can do for your soleus is the half kneeling calf raise. The thing you really need to watch with this exercise is to keep your foot back underneath you. You don’t want your shin to be at 90 degrees to the floor again you are looking for that stretch in your calf. Hippos are one of Africa's largest animals, and they aren't known for being cheerful, and they kill more people each year than lions, leopards, crocodiles, or any other significant predator. Watch how this hippo hunts down this lion and almost kills it with a single bite in this first clip. I’m sure the lion was injured, but it could have been worse. Hippos, despite their size, move quickly and are difficult to catch, even for a pride of lions. When lions attack baby hippos, they should expect fierce reprisal if the mother is around. During a drought, the scarcity of drinking water isn't the only issue. Another issue is a shortage of rain and water, which makes it difficult for food to be rich in nutrients. As a result, hippos become quite territorial, challenging animals they would ordinarily avoid, such as the lion in this video. This lion is not really looking for trouble, but the hippo wants the lion out of his territory. When the lion has had enough, it actually charges the hippo and the hippo relaxes, realizing, it's not worth the risk, especially when you take into consideration this is a young hippo and the lion would probably have the upper hand in a fight. This huge hippo bull confronts a male lion. They kind of stare at each other, but nothing more. The bull hippo is wondering what to do and the lion will probably react to what the hippo does. Neither one of them look like they’re in a rush until the hippo tries to flank the lion. That’s when the big feline decides to scamper off and position himself so he can see exactly what the hippo is doing. This hippo is forced to find a new bathing pool but must defy this pride of lions to gain access to it. You can see all the bite marks on the hippo’s body as it’s trying to chase the big cats away. The hippo’s hard work pays off and the lion pride decides to hold their picnic elsewhere. WILD DOGS Wild dogs don't favor hippos as prey, but they both loathe each other. Hippos and wild dogs are known for chasing each other while attempting to grab impala or other prey, which is why they don't get along. I'm not sure if hippos fear wild dogs, but they sure do find them bothersome. These wild dogs harass this massive hippo in this video. It's not as if the dogs will gain anything from this encounter, other than some entertainment. Because this is such a large and strong hippo, the wild dogs would take an enormous risk trying to take it down, which is unlikely. So, how do the dogs behave? They conclude that they've wasted enough of their time, and this hippo's time as well, and decide to call it a day. These dogs have already chased this young impala into the river. It was swimming wildly from side to side, looking for a way out. The disturbance irritated this massive hippo, who attempted to force the young impala into the water. Meanwhile, an adult impala, possibly the mother of the floundering baby, approached the water's edge. In a couple of seconds, the dogs were on it, but the Hyenas seized their prize and tore into the carcass. After fending off an attack by the increasingly angry hippo, the dogs redirected their focus to the youngster, and one brave dog swam into the dam in an attempt to snatch the impala. At this point, the newborn impala was exhausted and began to sink beneath the surface. All of this was too much for the hippo, who, after scaring the dog away from the kill, slung the carcass back over its shoulder. The dogs were defeated, and all they could do was stand there and watch as the impala plunged to its death at the dam's bottom. Today's meal isn't going to be on the lake for these dogs! This hippo is enraged and moves from side to side in the water keeping its huge mouth open, showing its monstrous fangs to these three wild dogs. The dogs are hesitant, but they know better than to mess around with this maniac! Another colossal hippo is attempting to find some peace and quiet in this watering hole, but guess who shows up to disrupt the fun? A pack of wild dogs, of course, is always on the lookout for an opportunity.

While that’s effective, it’s also… awkward. Try the angled barbell variation instead. • Place a barbell on the floor – no Landmine-style device necessary. • Place a calf block, step, or bumper plates in front of your barbell. The bar will slide to the optimal distance once you engage the weight. • Use other benches, boxes, or other sturdy gym equipment to support your upper body. • Load up the bar as desired. Hook the end of the bar to your dip belt. • Place a collar on the end of the barbell so your belt chain won't slide off and carefully get into position. • Keep your knees extended, but not hyperextended. Come down to a full, comfortable stretch and then up into an intense, full contraction at the top. Have fun walking funny for couple of days and enjoy bigger calves! – Andrew Heming

Greats work for me who is 5'10 and boyfriend who is 6'3. We use it for dips, knee & leg raises, inverted rows, stretches, l-sits.
