In this video i will explain RAID in operating system and general RAID levels and comparison between RAID levels. What is RAID? - Redundant Array of Inexpensive/Independent disks. RAID explanation. RAID is the technique in which we use multiple physical hard-drives together as a single logical hard-drive. Standard and basic RAID Levels and comparison between RAID levels in operating system. RAID 0: It stripes the data and stores it in the available disks. Striping can be at bit/byte/block level. RAID 1: It uses mirroring. It makes copies of all the available data and increases reliability RAID 2: This uses Error Correcting Code(ECC) like hamming code. More than 2 bits are used to store the ECC so minimum 3 dedicated disks are required to store the ECC. RAID 3:This is bit wise separation of data.Instead of ECC it uses Parity. Only 1 bit is used so only one dedicated disk is required. It increases data transfer rate but doesn't increase number of accesses. RAID 4: It is similar to RAID 3 but here data is divided block wise.It increases number of accesses but no improvement in performance. RAID 5:Instead of using dedicated disk for storing parity information it divides the parity info across all the disks. It uses 1 bit for parity. RAID 6: It is similar to RAID 5 but it saves 2 bits of parity information.
Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) is a virtual disk technology that combines multiple physical drives into one unit. RAID can create redundancy, improve performance, or do both. RAID should not be considered a replacement for backing up your data. If critical data is going onto a RAID array, it should be backed up to another physical drive or logical set of drives. RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks or Drives, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a data storage virtualization technology that combines multiple physical disk drive components into one or more logical units for the purposes of data redundancy, performance improvement, or both. This was in contrast to the previous concept of highly reliable mainframe disk drives referred to as "single large expensive disk" (SLED). Data is distributed across the drives in one of several ways, referred to as RAID levels, depending on the required level of redundancy and performance. The different schemes, or data distribution layouts, are named by the word "RAID" followed by a number, for example, RAID 0 or RAID 1. Each scheme, or RAID level, provides a different balance among the key goals: reliability, availability, performance, and capacity. RAID levels greater than RAID 0 provide protection against unrecoverable sector read errors, as well as against failures of whole physical drives. This video is about RAID levels. The levels are not hierarchical to each other, but RAID levels refer to different ways of organizing the different physical disks to achieve performance through parallelism and reliability through data redundancy. RAID Level 0 use the concept of data stripping to distribute the data strips on array of different physical disks, its good choice if high performance is the requirement, but its not fault tolerant as there is no way of recovering the lost data due to absence of any data redundancy approach.Its application areas are video editing, image retouching. RAID Level 1 uses the data mirroring technique to achieve redundancy, it copies all data stored on data disk to the other disk called mirror volume. The advantage is that its 100% reliable because in case of disk failure data can be recovered from the mirror disk, simple to implement. The disadvantage is basically involved in terms of cost as complete data is duplicated. Its used in accounting, financial applications where loss of data is not acceptable. RAID Level 2 , has different approach to achieve data redundancy, it has two groups of disk: one group stores the data and the second group stores the ECC information. ECC used is hamming code to generate parity information. All the data disks need to be synchronized to perform I/O operations. The advantage is that the data transfer rate is very high, simple controller design as compared to high level approaches and disadvantage is that no. of redundant disk to store parity bits is proportional to log of no. of data disks. No commercial applications as such. RAID Level 3 is improvement over RAID 2 , it uses byte level stripping and uses single redundant disk to store parity information instead of ECC(as in RAID 2 and log of no. of data disk is the number of redundant disk needed). The advantage is that it has high data transfer rate , only one redundant to store parity bits and disadvantage is that controller design is complex. Its application is in video production , live streaming etc. RAID Level 4 uses block level stripping, the data can be read from the block strips stored on different disks independently and there is bit by bit parity stored on parity disk. It is suitable for high data transfer rate, the ratio of parity disk to data disk is low thus high efficiency and disadvantage is in terms of write operations because the update has to be done in the data disk as well as the parity disk, complex controller design, no commercial application. RAID Level 5 has similar organization as of RAID 4 but here it distributes the parity bits on all disks and there is no separate disk for parity. The advantage is that high read data transaction rate, and write penalty of RAID 4 is also avoided because the load of parity is distributed on all disk, the disadvantage is the controller design is complex. it is used in file servers, email servers , database servers etc. RAID Level 6 is improved version of RAID 5 , it also uses distributed parity but there are two parity that are calculated and stored in blocks on different disks. The advantage is that its highly fault tolerant because of parity information is stored in 2 places and disadvantage is that the cost of twice parity calculations is high and complex controller design and application is in field of real time systems, mission critical applications like spacecraft launch etc. RAID 10 (RAID 1+0) level combines the RAID 1& RAID 0 to combine the best of both , and is high performance and highly reliable arrangement. It is referred to as Nested or Hybrid RAID. It is costly implementation and complex controller design. Lastly the benefits and downside of RAID technology is also discussed.
