Organelle just got 10X better. So did open source music-making: ORAC explained

Want to support the channel - and get ALL my tips in one convenient place including those to come in the future? Check out my In-Complete Book of Electronic Music Ideas, Tips and Tricks (hint: it's in-complete because it's always being updated…): ► Patreon: 🤍 Other places I hang out: ► Web: 🤍 ► Facebook: 🤍 ► Instagram: 🤍 ► Twitter: 🤍 My music: ► Bandcamp: 🤍 ► Spotify: 🤍 ► Apple Music:🤍 Want to email me personally? ► Ziv (at) The open source music community is blooming with creative ideas – unique sequencers, synths, loopers and effects are being shared by many innovative creators – from well-known commercial contributors like Mutable Instruments and projects like Pure Data and SuperCollider, to independent hobbyists posting innovative ideas on various forums. The problem with open source music platforms like Organelle, Raspberry Pi, Bela and others is that there’s no easy to use "glue" to connect one idea with another. Hardware musical instruments have MIDI, Eurorack has control voltage and patch cables, and VSTs have DAWs, but if you want to connect one open source project with another, you've got to dive into the source code, whether it's C, or even the visual Pure Data, something that is outside the reach of most musicians. With today's release of Orac, by developer Mark Harris ("Techno Bear"), that can change. Orac, short for "Organelle Rack" but in no way limited just to that platform, is an open source project designed to be the glue that open source music projects need. Orac is a musician friendly environment that makes connecting music-oriented open source components as easy as connecting a MIDI cable. Orac can host these components, easily link them together in sequential or parallel tracks, pass around audio and MIDI data, keep everything in sync (along with Ableton Link support), and support full MIDI in and out, including MIDI learn for easy controller mapping. Orac also supports saving entire patches as presets, so once you created a layout, it's easy to store and recall it. Orac for Organelle is available for free right now on 🤍 Check out Mark's youtube channel for a detailed overview of Orac on Organelle as well as for updates on support for future platforms: 🤍 NOTE: Occasionally I’ll try out affiliate marketing and include affiliate links. This means that I may earn a commission when you click on or make purchases via affiliate links. Google created an AI-based, open source music synthesizer

Move over musicians, AI is here. Google's 'NSynth' neural network is designed to take existing sounds and combine them using a complex, machine learning algorithm. The result? 28c3: Open source music: Tracking 2.0

Download high quality version: 🤍 Description: 🤍 Tom Hargreaves: Open source music: Tracking 2.0 Tracking is so 1990s. Nowadays MP3 and other similar formats are overwhelmingly more popular. But is this really a step forward? A (very) brief history of computer music, where we are at now, and why I think people are headed in the wrong direction. And what we can do about it. Distributing music as recordings is terribly limiting to hackers and tinkerers. Music as source code makes dissection, modification and reuse easier. I will introduce a prototype next-generation tracker for the web, with the ultimate aim of being a way to not just create but also distribute music, and to collaborate on music creation: Github for music, if you will. As a music creation tool, trackers have been displaced in popularity because they are: Balky (arcane command+parameter syntax, steep learning curve, have slowly grown by accretion without regard to comprehensibility) Underpowered (many useful DSP effects are unavailable) As a music distribution tool, tracked formats have been displaced in popularity because they are: Not ubiquitous (people may not have playback software) Underspecified (hence behaviour differs across implementations) I believe all of these problems are soluble, and I'm going to talk about how. "modplayjs" (a working title which may well change by December) is a tracker written in javascript. While capable of playing existing module formats, it is primarily a playground for experimenting with shedding two decades of accumulated baggage, and is currently under heavy development.

Introducing Maestoso - An open source music animation software

Hello everyone! I have been working on a music animation software since the past month or so and I wanted to share my progress with you. The program will be entirely free and open source and features a host of advanced MIR techniques to create beautiful musical animations. The entire design is focused on four primary aspects of musical information: Harmonic, Polyphonic, Monophonic and Rhythmic. Within the current scope, the final software will host eight distinct themes featuring animations that focus on the four above mentioned categorises. The basic idea behind this software is to use the power of midi information to extract and visualise all the musical information ranging from tempo changes, pulse, expressions, harmony, pitch, lyrics and even form. I am about 60-65% of the way through with the first version of the software but developing a software of this scale is a time consuming task and thus it might take a bit more time than expected to finish all that I intend to do with it. As I stated earlier, the first version of the software will be a tad bit limited but I have started developing the foundational methods and algorithms focused on the future scope of the project. The things I wish to integrate within the software before the end of this year are these: 1. Give the user more power with themes: let them design their own themes without having to code them. Currently, the user can only create their own themes by scripting them and manipulating the original source code. But I fully intend to implement a theme construction system that gives users a lot more power with the type of animations they wish to create without much hassle. 2. Integrate methods that tackle ornamentations and articulations more accurately and creatively - including pitch bends, trills and etc. 3. Provide more advanced support for lyrics: this is something I’ve already laid the basic ground work for but I do intend to make it more expansive and usable for the users. 4. Advanced harmonic analysis and manipulations: Harmonic tensions and functions are currently tackled in a very straight forward manner and implementing an advanced system for the same is quite a difficult task. The current harmony based animations focus on visualisations such as the tonnetz and harmonic geometry but I fully intend to expand on this and retrieve more harmonic information specific to functions and their roles in the perceived tension and release within the musical work to make more visually appealing animations. 5. Support for musical forms: some musical forms such as the fugues, raps and etc have distinct rules or stylistic traits which make them suitable for specialised animations. For instance, the concept of episodes in fugues (including transformations such retrograde, inversion or augmentation) can be well highlighted in animations. Similarly, rhyme schemes and rhythmic patterns of rap music too can be well highlighted. Although this system is quite straight forward to implement, it’s sheer scope is quite large considering how many distinctive genres exist. In conclusion, Maestoso is and will always be free and open source. There are many reasons for this and not the least of which is the fact that I don’t want to limit the software to the imagination of one person; music is an art form flooding with information and almost all of that information has the potential to be beautifully visualised in many different creative ways. Thank you for reading the long ass description!
