Meta AI has released a new text to music model called MusicGen that can synthesize music audio given text or melody prompt. It is claimed to be better than existing models such as Google’s MusicLM. MusicGen is a single-stage transformer language model that operates over several streams of compressed discrete music representation. The problem with open source music platforms like Organelle, Raspberry Pi, Bela and others is that there’s no easy to use "glue" to connect one idea with another. Hardware musical instruments have MIDI, Eurorack has control voltage and patch cables, and VSTs have DAWs, but if you want to connect one open source project with another, you've got to dive into the source code, whether it's C, or even the visual Pure Data, something that is outside the reach of most musicians. With today's release of Orac, by developer Mark Harris ("Techno Bear"), that can change. Orac, short for "Organelle Rack" but in no way limited just to that platform, is an open source project designed to be the glue that open source music projects need. Orac is a musician friendly environment that makes connecting music-oriented open source components as easy as connecting a MIDI cable. Orac can host these components, easily link them together in sequential or parallel tracks, pass around audio and MIDI data, keep everything in sync (along with Ableton Link support), and support full MIDI in and out, including MIDI learn for easy controller mapping. Orac also supports saving entire patches as presets, so once you created a layout, it's easy to store and recall it. Major/minor motion composition learning tool. Circle of 5th based composition learning tool. Music learning/teaching tool. Musical "typewriter". Chord generator/chorder. Fingering for Keyboard, Guitar and Ukulele learning tool. Database of chord progressions. .... or just another tool to waste your time with 175 scales, 74 chord types, more than 500 common progression, 100 free form progressions, progressions from 1,000 songs (many of them share the same chord progression off-course) using more than 1,200 playing patterns. LARAS is developed using Java Development Kit, Apache NetBeans and JFugue, an open source programming library to program music in the Java programming language by David Koelle. The third tab of Music Theory in the main area of the program is intended to be placeholder for information on basic music theory. This Music Theory section has nothing to do with the functionality of the program, as it will contain only information on music theory. To run use LARAS you need to have Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in your system. To install, just unzip the downloaded file and follow the instructions in the README.TXT in getting and installing the required Java Runtime Environment for your system. At this time, LARAS does not yet provide dedicated installer, it is intentional to make the process of setting LARAS across OS is similar: Download LARAS. But is this really a step forward? A (very) brief history of computer music, where we are at now, and why I think people are headed in the wrong direction. And what we can do about it. Distributing music as recordings is terribly limiting to hackers and tinkerers. Music as source code makes dissection, modification and reuse easier. I will introduce a prototype next-generation tracker for the web, with the ultimate aim of being a way to not just create but also distribute music, and to collaborate on music creation: Github for music, if you will. As a music creation tool, trackers have been displaced in popularity because they are: Balky (arcane command+parameter syntax, steep learning curve, have slowly grown by accretion without regard to comprehensibility) Underpowered (many useful DSP effects are unavailable) As a music distribution tool, tracked formats have been displaced in popularity because they are: Not ubiquitous (people may not have playback software) Underspecified (hence behaviour differs across implementations) I believe all of these problems are soluble, and I'm going to talk about how. "modplayjs" (a working title which may well change by December) is a tracker written in javascript. While capable of playing existing module formats, it is primarily a playground for experimenting with shedding two decades of accumulated baggage, and is currently under heavy development.
