I don’t know if you notice but at the moment auto industry it's in a transition period, a transition that want to eliminate the petrol and diesel as a source of energy for cars. In the last years Automakers made very big efforts and invest milions of dollars to lower the co2 emissions for their cars. They also build new factories and facilities to create new platforms for electric vehicles. The reason why they are in such a rush is because the governments rise the taxes for every co2 gram that a car emit. What this mean ? That simply mean manufacturers will pay 0 taxes if the cars will emit 0 co2. The less co2 emissions the less taxes for manufacturers. Now that we know the reason of why we see more and more Hybrid cars let's talk about all 3 versions. Mild Hybrid System (MHEV) The cars that are powered with the Mild Hybrid System have an internal combustion engine : diesel or petrol an electric motor and a separate special battery. Now the difference is that Mild Hybrid System uses a much smaller electric motor (it is more like a starter) and also a smaller battery (between 0.1 and 0.8 kWh). The electric motor and the battery can not power itself the car. Without the combustion engine, the car will not move, so the only reason the system is there is to help the internal combustion engine during acceleration and coasting. Because the combustion engine will be assisted at acceleration you will have also a smoother ride and some extra torque, the engine can sometimes switch off in order to save fuel and reduce co2 emissions. The main benefit and purposes of this system are to reduce Co2 Emissions and save more fuel, also it will give the car some extra power but in a very small amount (maximum 5%). Hybrid System (HEV) Now that we know what is Mild Hybrid System let’s go to the Hybrid System (HEV). We start by telling you that Hybrid System uses a bigger battery than the mild-hybrid system and also a much bigger motor or motors. Yes, you hear well “motors” because some Hybrid cars can have even 2 electric motors combine with the internal combustion engine. Also, Hybrid cars can be powered only by the electric motor and some of them can reach speeds of 130km\h only in electric mode, here depending on the battery charging status, road conditions and other elements. Because of the bigger battery and bigger electric motor, the car will have more Horsepower and torque. Also, you will experience more often the smooth and silent ride which you can find all the time in electric cars. Not only the fuel-saving and fewer co2 emissions are an advantage, but also the internal combustion engine and electric motor will work together to give you the maximum power. Something to remember about Hybrid System is that Hybrid cars can not be charged, they will change automatically when the car will break, go downhill or it can also be charged by the combustion engine when the car is running. Plug-in Hybrid System Plug-in Hybrid cars have a much bigger battery usually between 13 and 18 kwh and the great part is that you can charge the car through a cable, so not only that the battery will be recharged as you drive like the Hybrid system but you can also plug-in the cable in the car and charge it. When it comes to Charging speed, all Plug-in Hybrid cars can be charged at a normal wall socket that we all have on our homes, of course, the charging time will be much longer than on a special wallbox or a public fast-charging station. In a Plug-in Hybrid car, you will also have an electric-only range that varies between 25 and 75km depending on the battery size and the car model. The greater part is that you can have both worlds in a single car. You will have a combustion engine and an electric motor that give you the possibility to feel both experiences. In the city, you can drive 100% electrically and on the highway at long trips you can use the combustion engine. Also, Plug-in Hybrid cars will give you a better total range than electric cars or classic ICE cars. Another big advantage is that Plug-in Hybrid will benefit from better tax incentives, so you will pay fewer yearly taxes. Depending in which country you are you can benefit from big guvernmental discounts when you are buying the car for the first time. #sdadancars

Volvo Mild Hybrid System Explained - How well does it work at improving fuel economy?


Volvo is introducing mild hybrid technology to North America in 2022. Mild hybrids do not have the ability to drive on battery power alone, but supplement the power from the 2.0L 4 cylinder engine to improve performance and improve fuel economy. In this video I look at 2 models equipped with mild hybrid technology and explain how it works as well as why Volvo is adding them to their non plug-in offerings. The 2022 XC60 comes in four versions, starting at $50,750 with a 247-horsepower turbocharged engine called the B5. Both the 2022 B5 and Volvo XC60 B6 Inscription use a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that includes a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. In 2022, the Volvo XC60, S60, S90 and V90 Cross Country will ditch the old turbocharged T5 and T6 twin-charged petrol powertrains in favor of the new B5 turbo and B6 mild-hybrid twin-charged systems. Volvo is currently expanding the rather simple Volvo range, replacing the dual-charged T5 and T6 in the Volvo XC60, S90, S90 and V90 Cross Country with B5 and B6 models. Look for the same range of engine options in the Volvo XC60, including a turbo 4-cylinder and an optional turbo-supercharged 4-cylinder and an optional turbo-supercharged 4-cylinder. The 2020 XC60 lineup continues to consist entirely of 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines, the most powerful of which is a plug-in hybrid petrol that Volvo calls the T8 Twin. Every petrol Volvo uses a variant of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Volvo Cars mild hybrids use an integrated 48V battery to power the starter/alternator, improving conventional engine performance and reducing carbon emissions. Unlike conventional hybrids or plug-in hybrids, Volvo mild-hybrid systems are designed to increase the efficiency and power of the engine, not the transmission and drive gears. In other words, a conventional hybrid or plug-in hybrid can use electricity to physically drive the wheels, while a Volvo mild-hybrid system squeezes most of that power out of a conventional engine. Volvo\'s mild-hybrid system allows the remaining internal combustion engine (ICE) to be powered by the battery, reducing engine stress and carbon emissions while increasing productivity and fuel consumption. Unlike conventional hybrids (or even mild hybrids), Volvo Cars\' plug-in hybrids have the unique advantage of running in all-electric mode for short periods of time and can also be charged externally. The award-winning Volvo XC60 midsize SUV is offered exclusively in hybrid powertrain, ranging from petrol and diesel light hybrids to petrol-electric plug-in hybrids. Volvo won\'t have a full electric range until 2030, so in the meantime Volvo has updated its T5 and T6 four-cylinder engines with a new 48-volt light hybrid system and integrated starter-generator, naming the new powertrains B5 and B6. Both the B5 and B6 will continue to use the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as a base and add a 48-volt hybrid system equipped with a 13-hp Integrated Starter Generator (ISG). These new powertrains will be rolled out gradually across the lineup, starting with the facelifted 2022 XC of the 60s and the slightly refreshed 2022 V90 Cross Country. Following the introduction of mild-hybrid technology to the XC90 and XC60 XC90 SUVs in selected markets in 2019 and the expansion of its 48-volt system to other \'60\' and \'90\' models last year, Volvo will finally launch the powertrain. America. The Volvo XC60 SUV has always attracted Volvo Cars buyers, and the 2022 model will continue to attract attention with its standard mild-hybrid powertrain. A hybrid car is a vehicle which has two propulsion systems: - an endothermic engine, which can be powered by diesel or petrol - and a high energy-efficient electric engine. There are many kinds of hybrid cars but, before understanding how they work, let’s see the main types: - Firstly we find Mild hybrid, known also as PHEV, it seems a normal combustion engine car, but owns a small electric engine that supports the thermic one in several tasks, such as standing starts for example, or with low gears. - Next we find Full hybrid, which combines the engine power together with the electric one, with this type of car it is possible to travel fully electric, but considering its not so capacious battery just few kilometres can be covered without using the combustion engine. - Next we have Full hybrid cars, which combines the thermic engine power with the electric one; with this type of car it is possible to travel in fully electric mode, but considering the small capacity of the battery just a few kilometres can be covered without using the combustion engine. - Finally we find Plug-In hybrid, the most common and promising technology; it has the same characteristics of the Full hybrid version, but the size and capability of battery is much bigger, allowing the car to travel fully electric for even 50/70 kilometres. Moreover the batteries can be charged externally with a special power cable. Beyond these macro categories, we may add another classification, which analyses the hybrid platforms, or better said, how the different propulsion systems interact within each other. - Firstly there are Parallel Hybrids, in which both conventional and electric motors give traction to the driving wheels at the same time or by taking turns, they are connected within each other by a special transmission (gearbox) that makes them interact (efficiently) in the best way possible. - There are also Serial Hybrids; this special platform works differently from the previous examples: The electric motor provides motion to the wheels, while the small petrol engine gives energy to the electric one, through a generator. Now that we have seen the different Hybrid cars typologies, let’s see how these particular vehicles work, taking into consideration the latest generation of Plug-In Hybrids. As we’ve seen before, hybrid cars are made of two propulsion systems, an endothermic engine and an electric one, that, working together or individually, make the car to move; this particular setup makes the vehicle mechanics to result more complex compared to the traditional type. In the front of a hybrid car is placed the traditional combustion engine, which can be powered by petrol or diesel, in this case an inline 4-cylinders one. Right by its side is found the electrical engine, specifically a permanent magnet synchronous motor; this type of engine ensures a very stable and accurate rotation speed. By using an inverter, for the engine start, and an ESC, or electronic stability control, the motor can adjust its speed. The ESC can also provide the engine rotation inversion and the dynamic braking. The dynamic braking, also known as regenerative braking, makes the car to store energy when the brake is in use thanks to the help coming from the electric engine, a clever solution that enables the batteries to extend its own autonomy. Next to the electric motor is the generator, it has the same characteristics of electric engine used give power to the car, but in this case it is used to store energy instead.

What is a Mild Hybrid Engine? 🤍 What is a Mild Hybrid System? Whenever a car company attaches the world "hybrid" onto a new car, it's easy to have a few expectations about what that car will be like. We can assume it'll be more fuel-efficient than a typical gas-powered car and that it has some sort of electric and gas powered motor. Over the last decade or so, automakers have been replacing traditionally mechanically-driven components with more efficient parts like electric power steering racks, electric brake vacuum pumps and electric water pumps. On top of that, automakers have been adding in a ton of new infotainment options, and also driver-assist safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, etc. Plus, you’ve still got heated seats, heated steering wheels and heated windshields. Needless to say, standard 12-volt electrical systems are being stretched thin; so 48-volt systems are stepping in and help accommodate the need for more on-board power. Different manufacturers are using this 48 volt battery in different ways, the Bentley Bentayga, for example, uses the 48-volt battery to drive an electric sway bar system for better handling; the 2017 Audi SQ7 TDI it acts like an an electric supercharger; and the Audi A8 & A7 Sportback are sporting a mild hybrid system. The Mild Hybrid is classified as a gasoline electric vehicle, but the mild is a reference to how much or rather how little, the car uses the electric motor. In a full hybrid car the electric motor makes the car move, in a mild hybrid the electrical component cannot (and does not) propel the vehicle. The gas powered engine is doing all the work, the electric motor is only assisting. The 48-volt battery has 3 components, the electric starter generator, electrical supercharger and DC/DC converter. This final component supports the more traditional 12-volt applications in the vehicle, things like the infotainment system, wipers, seat heaters or parking brake etc. The real benefit of the mild hybrid system is that it saves fuel by shutting off the gasoline engine when the vehicle is stopped, braking or cruising. How do Mild Hybrids Impact the Drive? We’re going to use the Audi A7 Sportback and A8 as our primary example since this was the first time we really noticed the mild hybrid engine having an impact on the driving experience. Smoother Start Stop A Smoother start stop system is the most obvious, or actually least obvious benefit. this marriage of elctricfication and combustion engines, you don’t even notice that the car turned off while idling at the light. If the driver takes his foot off the accelerator at a speed between 55 and 160 km/h (34.2 to 99.4 mph), the car can coast for up to 40 seconds with the engine off completely. During slow coasting, the start-stop phase already begins at 22 km/h (13.7 mph). And when you’re stopped at a light the stop start feature will use the front camera to productively restart the engine as soon as the vehicle ahead starting moving. Saves Fuel by turning off the engine while coasting Decoupling the engine from the transmission to save fuel has been around for a years, but now the 48V system in the Audi A7 Sportback & A8 have enough juice that the engine can switch off completely for up to 40 seconds when you let off the gas, saving even more fuel and regening energy back to the battery in the boot. As soon as you get back on the accelerator the engine refires and you’re away again. When it comes to the drive, we did notice that the breaking did feel a little soft since the mild hybrid engine will use this as a opportunity to recuperate some power. This is the driving moments that made me curious to learn more about the mild hybrid system since the pedal feedback is noticably electric. But the 48V system gives other advantages. On the Audi A8, Adaptively damped air suspension is standard with selectable ‘Comfort’ and ‘Dynamic’ modes, but you can specify something cleverer – a system that, with the help of a camera, can ‘see’ potholes, speedbumps and so-on. Because the car knows the obstacle’s there, it can prepare itself accordingly. Rather than anti-roll bars A8s thusly equipped get an electric actuator at each corner. These actuators ‘pick-up’ individual wheels (or even lift the whole car) – stressing or relieving corners as necessary to dampen body movements.
