In this presentation by Epic’s Paulo Souza, we use the power of Quixel Megascans to build a natural looking environment in Unreal Engine. By relying on the latest world building tools in Unreal, we're able to quickly create a terrain leveraging its new Edit Layer functionality and sculpt it very quickly with the use of Landscape Blueprint Custom Brushes. We also show techniques that can help you create interesting blending effects using Runtime Virtual Textures. In this tutorial we will create a planet and add a surface to this planet in Unreal Engine. We are using Earth textures but feel free to create your own.
In this episode we sculpt a cave directly into our landscape: two entrances/exits, and a hole in the top for the creation of god rays (crepuscular rays). We cover how to edit your landscape material to allow for the sculpting of a visibility mask anywhere in your landscape to make the hole for the cave. We also cover my favorite trick for creating cave ceilings quickly. To finish out the episode we do an overview of the Environmental Light Mixer for indoor lighting, including the settings you need to get two different kinds of god rays- light shaft bloom on the directional light for god rays when looking at the light, and volumetric fog on the atmospheric fog setting. We finish out the episode on how to ensure your AI character can move within and out of the cave. In this talk, Environment Art Lead Darko Pracic takes you through Embark Studio’s use of Houdini for creating realistic landscapes in Unreal Engine. The first section of the video covers workflows for shaping out the world using LiDAR data and QuadSpinner’s Gaea Bridge tool. Darko compares the studio’s LiDAR processing setup in PDG with previous LiDAR workflows in which artists had to learn complex GIS applications like GlobalMapper. Then, you’ll get a look at Embark’s export/import setup from Houdini to Unreal Engine. Next, Darko goes more in depth and demonstrates the studio’s in-house heightfield utility HDAs, highlighting the benefits of working with landscapes in 3D rather than 2D. You’ll learn about Houdini’s strengths not just as a procedural tool, but also as a tool for non-technical artists to make large landscape changes that are beautiful and realistic—even in a fast-paced production environment for free-to-play games.
