I applied a bunch of tweaks to it, from using Latte Dock to achieve a look and feel I liked, to changing the widget theme, the position of window controls, making windows appear centered, and other small tweaks here and there. If you want to achieve a similar look, you can follow a video from linux Scoop, I left a link in the description below. I didn't apply everything he did there, I mainly took the Latte Dock and plasma themes. Now that this is out of the way, let's begin with what I liked about KDE Plasma. 🤍 ## What I liked Apart from completely changing the layout, the number of small things you can change is just amazing: from how the task manager looks and behaves, to which notification icons you want to see and when, or the clock style, you can really change everything you want. I also enjoy the widget system, that you can add to your desktop. I added my Video folder, and a few system monitoring ones,, but that's just the tip of the iceberg here. There are hundreds of widgets you can download from the Plasma, let's call it "store" for lack of a better word. It was nice to rediscover notification icons, especially how they've been integrated in plasma. They all feel part of the same interface, which is rare. Usually, you get a disjointed collection of icons of varying shapes, sizes and colors, but here, they're all looking nice and similar, and I must admit I had missed them quite a lot on elementary OS. Having a full-featured menu is also very refreshing. It's not just a list of apps, or categories, you also get access to your favorite folders, your recent files history, and, more importantly, it has file search. Another thing that I missed, is KDE Connect. I used it on elementary OS, but there is no way to really integrate it, especially since the elementary OS notification system doesn't really support actionable notifications, so there was no way to answer messages, or share files, so it was a glorified remote control. ## What I don't like Of course, not everything is roses and rainbows. There are things that I don't really like about KDE as a desktop environment. The default theme, in light mode, is pretty bland and looks a bit old, especially the buttons. I'm using the daark theme which kinda resolves the issue, but the default applications theme really needs an update, in my opinion. My main issue here is with applications. The default suite of applications in KDE is very inconsistent. On the one hand, you have apps that have really simple defaults, and a lot of power under the hood if you need it, like Dolphin. On the other hand, you have applications that really want you to see every single feature, panel, and option available, right out of the box, like the Calendar. There also seem to be a less sizable community developing KDE apps as on GNOME or elementary OS. A lot of the apps are pretty old, and look it, like Korganizer, or Kmail. I couldn't find a todo list application along the lines of Getting Things GNOME or Planner. I couldn't find an equivalent to Audacity for the KDE desktop. Of course, you can always install non-KDE apps on KDE, and that's what I did, with the GIMP, Planner, or Audacity. And that's where KDE grabs the advantage again: it integrates GTK apps a lot better than GNOME integrates Qt apps. The fact that you can choose any theme you want for GTK apps under KDE is great, because it means these things will look a lot better integrated, and not feel so alien. Using KDE apps on GNOME or Elementary OS is a weird experience, as they really don't look or feel native, but GTK apps on KDE feel just at home. Now I praised the avalanche of settings before, and I'm not going to apologize for it, but it's also a bit of a hassle sometimes to find a specific thing you're looking for.

First, you can pick an accent color from your wallpaper, You can also opt into the breeze classic theme, which will apply the accent color to the window title bars as well. You can choose to tint all colors using your accent color, so you get the same hue everywhere. The second big change is the floating panels. Panels on KDE used to be stuck against a screen edge, but no longer! You can now make them float above the screen edge they sit on, in the "More options" button when editing the plasma panel. When applying a global theme, you now get to pick which parts you want to change: you don't have to apply the theme in bulk. Another good thing for people who like having more consistency, is the integration of GNOME applications: headerbars will have a border radius more consistent with the Breeze look and feel, and the menus look a bit more native as well. First, if you're using a laptop that supports power profiles, you'll get a better looking pop-up in the system tray, with icons to reflect each profile. The user switcher applet also has a nicer look, with a picture of the currently logged in user, and the pop-up when clicking that applet now looks nicer as well, with more spacing. The pop-up menu for copying the date to the clipboard, in various formats has also been revamped to be more legible. First is touch mode. KDE Plasma has a tablet mode that was toggled automatically when the system detected that you were using a touchscreen only. Now, you can decide to toggle it on and off yourself Still on that note, you now get the ability to do gestures from the screen's edge, basically like hot corners. Swiping 4 fingers down on the touchpad will open the Overview, with your open windows, virtual desktops, and a search bar, that was the big new feature for plasma 5.24. Swiping 4 fingers up will bring an overview of all your virtual desktops, basically the desktop grid, and swiping 4 fingers left or right will move to the next or previous workspace. Other small changes include the ability to select a non native resolution for your display on Wayland , you can now see the frequency your wifi network uses if your network uses both 2.4 and 5Ghz, and the Krunner spell checker action now detects the language you're using and tells you if the spelling is correct. Discover now can display the permissions that flatpak apps use. The App Page also has been overhauled, with instant access to the license of an app, the size on disk, or the version, and it can now tell you when an app has been uninstalled but still has some data on disk. The sidebar will also show all subcategories that were previously located in the Applications submenu, so space is better used, and you're not wasting clicks. Finally, proprietary apps will now have a warning you can display by clicking a small icon next to the license name, to warn you that this app might do weird things, or collect data.

Layan has a GTK variant. To install it, click the "Configure GNOME / GTK application styles" in the Application Style panel, then "Get new GNOME- GTK Application styles". Search for Layan, and click "install". For the icons, I use the "Inverse-blue-dark" icons, which you can get from the "Get new icons" button. The plasma theme is also the "Layan" theme, you can get it from the "Get new plasma styles" button. The window decorations I use are called Layan. You can get them from the "'Get New Window decorations". The widgets I use are called "Window title applet", "Latte separator", "Better Inline clock", and "latte spacer". I have a top bar with a global menu, and a dock to run and manage running apps. I don't use the regular Plasma panels to get that result, though, I use latte dock. Latte can import layouts: Then, right click on the dock, and select "Edit dock", then right click on it again, and select "Layouts - edit layouts". Here, you have an "Import" button, select "Import from local file" and go select my layout. If you'd prefer to see each tweak I made, here we go: - The main dock, I haven't changed much. I removed every applet there that wasn't latte tasks, and every separator. In the Appearance settings, I set an absolute size of 48, disabled zoom on hover. I added a 10% margin, with 15% thickness, and added 8px between the dock and the screen edge. The background is 50% opaque, with a 34% radius and 29px shadow. I also enabled blur and shadows. Now, for the top panel. - Right click on the dock, and select "edit dock", then right click again and select "Ad dock / panel", then "Empty panel" In that panel, I added the following widgets: - Application launcher: I configured the applet by changing its icon, I used the draw-circle icon that's available from the "All" icons drop down menu. - Window Title widget. I configured it to only display the application name, and not to show the icon. The name is written in bold. - Latte separator, and the global menu - I then added a latte spacer, followed by the better inline clock widget. I configured it to have a font size of 16px, and show the date and separator, using a 24h clock. - Finally, there's another latte spacer and finally, the system tray widget from the base Plasma desktop. Having both latte spacers use the setting "fill available space" makes the clock centered. In terms of how the panel is laid out, I set it to appear on the top edge, and checked the "Hide floating gap for maximized windows" box. In the Appearance tab, I set it to be 28px, with a max length of 98% so it doesn't extent to the full length of the display. I added an 8px gap from the screen edge, and no margins at all on the panel. It's 50% opaque, with blur and shadows enabled, and has a 34% radius, with 29px shadows. I didn't change the Effects tab, but here it is just in case.

There's a new Overview effect, that you can access with Super + W . It's basically the GNOME Activity view. KDE also now supports fingerprint login. It's also now much easier to set a default wallpaper, just right clicking on any image file will allow you to set it as the background. Panels can be dragged and moved using the main interface when editing Plasma panels. Right clicking on the desktop now shows a Configure display settings option. The Plasma Pass password manager has been redesigned, and zones that you can scroll in various widgets now use the same style. The weather widget will prompt you to be configured at first launch, you can decide to always show the date below the time in the clock, and the main menu's sidebar doesn't use arrows anymore. In the task manager, you can set new tasks to appear on the left instead of on the right.Programs that play audio will also get a volume slider in their tooltip. Very important notifications will now sport an orange strip on the side so you can tell that it's super duper important you look at it and maybe do something. The headers and title text are now more constrasted and more legible, notifications that are related to a video file will now show a little thumbnail of said file, so they're treated like all other multimedia files Finally, Krunner has a new inline help feature. The focus effect on various widgets, like buttons, text fields, checkboxes, or radio buttons has been enlarged. Your folder icons will also now follow your accent color if you chose one, or the color used for selections. Speaking of accent colors, you can now define a custom one directly next to the pre-made selections, which is much easier. Some color schemes haves been modified, with the basic Breeze being renamed Breeze Classic, so there's less confusion with Breeze Light and Breeze Dark, and the latter will replace Breeze High Contrast. In KDE, even the settings have settings and these have been moved to the system setting's hamburger menu. Pages that used a single grid or a list now have a more modern, frameless style. The display and monitor settings page now shows the scale factor for each display and their physical resolution, the speaker test feature has been revamped and looks better, and enabling auto login will now prompt you to make changes to your password wallet. Discover can now automatically reboot your computer once an update is complete, and it also shows a bottom tab bar if the window is very narrow, like on mobile devices. T he updates page has been reworked, and it tells you the source of the update. Discover can also open and install flatpakref files that you downloaded locally. KDE 5.24 keeps working towards making Wayland a first class citizen. It adds a drawing tablet page in the settings, it supports greater colors than 8 bits, The screenshot tool can now capture the active window on Wayland as well, and support for VR headsets is back, with better performance. You can also define a primary monitor, minimize all windows using the widget of the same name, and there are multiple improvements to touchscreen devices, notably to make the virtual keyboard appear, or with using styluses.

Kalendar is an app to handle your calendars, but also your tasks. It integrates with your online accounts. Plan is a project management application, that lets you handle tasks and subtasks, but it goes a lot deeper. Calligra Suite is KDE's Office suite, great if you work on your own documents, and the ODF format. For personal budgets, you have Skrooge. For video editing, use Kdenlive. It's a full featured non linear video editor that lets you manage video and audio using tracks. It has tons of effects you can apply, transitions, and it can import and export to a TON of formats. For artists, there is no better drawing tool on Linux than Krita. It's a digital painting appplication with tons of tools and brushes to let you create what you want. It's not only on Linux but also on Android, so you could even use it there, and it handles graphic tablets and their lovely styluses. If, like me, you're no artist, but you still want a simple app to edit screenshots, or draw a few doodles here and there, Kolourpaint is going to be your go-to. It's basically MS Paint for KDE with anti aliasing, which of course you can disable if you like that pixel art look. If you have a local music collection, and you're looking for a simple, but nice looking music player, then Elisa is the one for you. Kasts is a small podcast app. You can add your own podcast feeds, or search for a specific podcast in the discover tab, and add it this way. You'll get a list of all episodes that you can then download and play. KDE Connect it basically lets you integrate your Android phone, or iPhone, with your desktop. You can send files to and from each device, use the phone as a remote for audio or presentations, or as a trackpad, and more. Subtitle Composer lets you create subtitles for your videos, or for someone else's videos. You have tons of options to make them look like you want, open an existing file to modify it, select which language you're working on, and export your file. With Yakuake, you just press F12, or any other key you prefer, and yo get a nice little terminal that drops down from the top of your screen. Sweeper lets you clean a bunch of stuff that might take up space on your hard drive, like various caches, cookies, web history, recent documents, command history, and more. Krusader is a file manage that handles archives in the file manager, FTP, has multiple panels to open folders side by side, sync folders, compare file contents, it can batch rename and is completely customizable, on top of having a super powerful search module.

To be honest choosing between Breeze and ClassiK as Widget Style makes no big difference unless you want... like... one or two extra customization options. The two look identical to one another. Also a more "basic" video because I don't think Latte is ready for me opening edit mode a lot for a video tutorial, at least for now. 25 years ago today, Matthias Ettrich sent an email to the de.comp.os.linux.misc newsgroup explaining a project he was working on. The latest and direct result of that email (plus a quarter of a century of relentless experimentation, development and innovation) has just landed in KDE's repositories. This time around, Plasma renews its looks and, not only do you get a new wallpaper, but also a gust of fresh air from an updated theme: Breeze - Blue Ocean. The new Breeze theme makes KDE apps and tools not only more attractive, but also easier to use both on the desktop and your phone and tablet. Of course, looks are not the only you can expect from Plasma 25AE: extra speed, increased reliability and new features have also found their way into the app launcher, the software manager, the Wayland implementation, and most other Plasma tools and utilities. Check out the full announcement to get more details: 🤍 More reasons to celebrate 🥳 at 🤍 #KDE25Years

The rest of the desktop is completely empty out of the box, so any user would normally have their attention drawn to the taskbar. The presence of the 3 classic window buttons is also easy to understand. The KDE / Plasma application style isn't coherent: some apps will display a menu, like the Terminal, some only have a simple header, like Discover, and some have toolbars and a hamburger menu, like Dolphin and Gwenview. Now, in terms of installing applications, the default App Store, Discover, is OK. It has clearly laid out sections for updates, applications, or what's already installed, and the Install/ Uninstall buttons are clear enough. KDE Plasma is mainly known for its customization options, and for beginners, these will be pretty hard to get to grips with. While the Settings app regroups most of the settings a user can change, these are very, very numerous. Like, there are tons and tons of settings panels, sub sections, and tabs. So, for complete beginners that have no experience with computers, I'd say KDE Plasma is an OK choice. Windows User The default layout won't be hard to understand, as it's virtually the exact same that Windows has used since Windows 10. The menu is reminiscent of the Start menu, the way apps are opened, minimized and closed, and how they appear in the taskbar is identical, and the placement of the notification tray and the clock is the same. In terms of default user experience, some apps use menubars, and some don't, much like on Windows, so a user used to that proprietary OS shouldn't be lost at all. The store won't be confusing either. Even though Discover isn't really up to par visually with the Store experience Windows 11, or even Windows 10 users might expect, the base concepts are very similar. In terms of settings, the KDE Plasma settings app kinda looks like what's available in Windows 10, in a general layout sense, but after that, all bets are off. Sure, there is a search feature, but here again the abundance of options, subsections, tabs inside of settings panels, and complimentary pop-ups will definitely be overwhelming for a Windows user. macOS User First, the default layout has virtually nothing in common with macOS: you don't get a top panel or a dock, at least out of the box. While the dock's functionality is contained in the main panel, it doesn't look like the macOS dock, and it will be confusing. In terms of applications, the non descriptive names probably will be just as much of an issue for macOS users. The apps themselves won't be too problematic though, as, apart from a few remaining exceptions, the menubars aren't super present anymore, and the use of mainly toolbars + titlebars combos is relatively similar to what macOS does. So, out of the box, KDE Plasma is just NOT that friendly to macOS users. The whole layout, window controls, and lack of global menubar, just won't work for them. Thankfully, KDE Plasma is also the most customizable desktop environment, and the one that can get the closest to the real thing as possible. You can have a dock, a top panel with global menu, a sidebar with your widgets, a full screen launcher, have a spotlight-like runner, and even match the exact icons, and look and feel of macOS Big Sur.
