Inside The $12 Million Pilatus PC24 Private Jet Intro The Pilatus PC24 is simply unique. It’s the only aircraft combining the versatility of a turboprop with the cabin size of a medium-light jet, and the performance of a light jet. It’s a plane that simply doesn’t fit into any of the existing business jet categories. That’s why Pilatus had to create a new one: the Super Versatile Jet category. The Pilatus PC24 has been engineered to be “off-road” compatible from the beginning. Its outstanding short-field performance, even on unpaved runways, opens up an incredible level of mobility. Overview & History The Pilatus PC-24 was unveiled in May 2013 and deliveries began five years later in April 2018, making it a one-of-a-kind offering in the private jet business. It does not strictly fit into any current aircraft category. It features the cabin space of a midsize jet, the performance of a light jet, and the maneuverability of a turboprop. This has prompted Pilatus to design a new category for the PC-24, dubbed the Super Versatile Jet. It has a strong short-field performance and can land and take off on dirt runways. Interior The Pilatus PC-24 has a continuous level floor with a cabin height maximum of 5 ft 1 in, comfortable leathers, and rare oak cupboards with unique designs. Once seated, the chairs rotate in numerous orientations and the armrests on both sides fold down, making it much simpler to converse within the cabin. Of course, when an aircraft is designated the Super Versatile Jet, you expect it to apply to every part of the aircraft, including the cabin. The aircraft can be outfitted purely for freight, medical evacuations, or as a 10-seat commuter service. A typical business jet arrangement on the Pilatus PC-24 will include either six or eight seats. The Pilatus PC-24 has ample capacity inside, with a cabin volume of 501 cubic feet and a luggage compartment of 90 cubic feet, along with a cargo door wide enough for a pallet. Cockpit The PC-24, like all Pilatus aircraft, is approved for single-pilot operation, which is quite unusual in this category of aircraft. Pilatus accomplished this by designing an efficient and user-friendly cockpit configuration. The cockpit has been designed to lessen the pilot's burden, allowing for increased safety and complete situational awareness. If you charter the aircraft, you will nearly always find two pilots in the front, but if you are a pilot who wants to split your time between the front and the back, this aircraft has you covered. Pilatus has installed their Advanced Cockpit Environment on the PC-24. According to Pilatus, it "is so capable and provides such a wealth of functionality that in its most basic configuration it boasts the most intuitive and user-friendly cockpit concepts ever seen in business aviation." The PC-24 has four 12-inch displays that allow the pilot (or pilots) to organize all pertinent information most conveniently and effectively. A Synthetic Vision System, Autothrottle, Graphical Flight Planning, Traffic Collision Avoidance System, and Localiser Performance with Vertical guiding capabilities are all featured in the Pilatus Advanced Cockpit Environment. Performance The Pilatus PC-24 is propelled by two rear-mounted Williams FJ44-4A turbofan engines, each capable of delivering 3,420 lbf of torque and 6,840 lbf total. These engines have a maximum cruise speed of 440 knots and a maximum range of 2,000 nautical miles. The take-off and landing distances are quite outstanding, at only 2,930 and 2,370 feet or 900 and 720 meters respectively. The benefit of these figures is that the PC-24 can reach significantly more airports than any other aircraft of its size. For example, there are around 11,500 paved airports accessible with a take-off distance of 2,930 feet globally. When you include airports that are at least 2,930 feet long and unpaved (grass or gravel), the total number of accessible airports rises by over 20,000. Charter Cost Chartering the PC-24 is a fantastic alternative if you want to travel someplace off the main path, or if you want to fly between big airports yet want a comfortable and smooth aircraft. The hourly cost of chartering the PC-24 is expected to be a little more than $4,000. Purchase Cost The starting price for a new Pilatus PC-24 ranges from 9 to 12 million dollars. If a used PC-24 is more to your taste, unfortunately it won't be much less expensive, even if you can locate one for sale! The very first PC-24 of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS Central Operations) with serial number 118 arrived in Australia in April 2019. A few days later, the first landings on unpaved strips went ahead in Kingoonya, a small and almost totally abandoned farming settlement in the central outback of the Australian state of South Australia. The PC-24 is the first business jet worldwide designed to take off and land on very short or unpaved runways, and to come with a cargo door as standard. This is easily the most exciting and crazy flight experience I've ever done! I flew with a Pilatus test pilot aboard the new Pilatus PC-24 "Super Versatile Jet" over Switzerland. During the test flight we did several extreme G force banking, stall demo with gear down, acceleration demo, dutch roll demo, touch and go, missed approach and sharp descend into Sannen/Gstaad Airport which is well known of the short runway. Join me for a highly educational and instructional video with a professional Pilatus test pilot who knows all the tricks of the trade, as we take a flight within Switzerland aboard the Pilatus PC-24 Super Versatile Private Jet. In this video, I have the pleasure of travelling with professional test pilot Matthew Hartkop and being given a demonstration of several basic (and not so basic!) flight manoeuvres, with the beautiful Swiss Alps as the setting for this highly enjoyable insight in to professional flying. Before I set off, the pilot checks all the exterior features of the Pilatus PC-24 jet to ensure that she is air-worthy and I get a look at the angle of attack probe, which measures air flow and the probability at any given moment of an engine stall (more about that later), and probes for dynamic and static pressure which are heated to extreme temperatures to prevent any ice build-up, especially at higher altitudes. The tyres of the aircraft are also checked, which are specially designed and toughened to allow for landing on not just traditional tarmac runways, but also fields, grass and dirt. Inside the aeroplane, and before take-off, Matthew shows me some of the highlights of the sophisticated and advanced information display of the aircraft which shows all sorts of useful information for the pilot including the flight vector, altitude, terrain description and engine performance. There is also a navigational display showing our flight plan. After a very interesting take-off (crossing a road and a herd of cows!), we’re finally up in the snowy Alps, initially at a height of 10,000 feet. During the flight I have the thrilling experience of briefly taking control of the plane, adjusting the angle of the nose and witnessing the PC-24’s intelligent systems automatically adjusting the throttle. I also get a demonstration of the anti-stall feature, with the aeroplane acting to correct a too steep angle of attack to prevent an engine stalling event. My pilot demonstrates the Dutch roll, a flight manoeuvre almost like swimming, with rolling and moving from side to side at the same time. I also feel the squeeze as I am exposed to high G forces created by the touch and go manoeuvre and higher banking angles. All in all, it was a terrific treat to be able to take this tranquil flight within Switzerland and learn so much at the same time. I’d like to thank Matthew for all of his useful instruction. The Pilatus PC-24 was developed from the PC-12 model, with work starting in 2007 and the first aeroplanes being delivered in February 2018. The aims for this new PC-24 model were increased range and speed but with the retention of the aircraft’s key ability to land on uneven and unusual terrain. The aeroplane is powered by two Williams FJ44 turbofan engines. The aeroplane can accommodate up to eight passengers and can be flown with either a one or two man crew. The plane is about 55 feet long and has a swing span of almost 56 feet and can cruise at a maximum of 506 mph with a range of about 2,200 km with a 2,500 lb payload. As of April 2019, the fleet of 25 Pilatus PC-24 Super Versatile Business jets has logged more than 4000 flight hours with the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, Swiss airline Premium Jet AG and American Plane Sense and Western Aircraft all making use of the aeroplane.

0:00 - Intro This is the Pilatus PC24: the only aircraft combining the versatility of a turboprop with the cabin size of a medium-light jet, and the performance of a light jet. Stay with us till the end of the video because here is the real cost of owning the Pilatus PC24. 0:18 - Purchase and Charter Price The base purchase price for a new PC24 is $11 million before options. If purchasing the aircraft is out of budget, the charter price ranges between $4,000 and $5,000 per hour. Naturally, prices will vary depending on availability, fuel prices, ground fees, and more. 0:38 - Operating Costs When it comes to operating the PC24, like for any aircraft, there are two expense categories to consider: fixed costs and variable costs. 0:48 - Fixed Costs Fixed costs are those that you pay no matter what. Whether the aircraft flies or not has no effect on fixed costs. These costs do not change in relation to the number of hours the aircraft flies. There are five criteria that have been identified as the biggest contributors to the annual fixed cost of operation. 1:08 - Crew Salary In terms of fixed costs, the crew salary is a significant one. Whether the aircraft is flying or not, the crew will need to be paid their salaries. This is a cost that will vary depending on region and aircraft type. 1:38 - Crew Training This is a cost that will keep on occurring every year, whether your aircraft flies or not. Having well-trained crew members is important. Again, they are integral to the safe and efficient operation of your aircraft. 1:58 - Hangar The third is Hangar. When it comes to aircraft storage there are two options – hangar or tie down. In most cases, owners are not going to let their planes sit out in the wind and rain. Therefore, it is a safe assumption that most private aircraft will be stored in hangars when not in use. 2:25 - Insurance In simple terms, there are two types of insurance that private planes must have. The first is liability insurance. This provides cover against loss, damage, or injury to third parties, such as passengers, cargo, and baggage. The second is Hull Insurance. Hull insurance policies are agreed on the value of the aircraft. Therefore, in the event of a total loss, insurers will pay the agreed value as opposed to the current market value. 3:40 - Management The fifth and final one is Management. An aircraft management team provides all the necessary services required to fly the aircraft. For example, sourcing and managing pilots to make sure the aircraft is airworthy, are all tasks provided by your aircraft management company. 4:18 - Total Fixed Cost 4:27 - Variable Costs Variable costs, on the other hand, are directly proportional to the number of hours the aircraft flies per year: the more you fly the aircraft, the more it will cost to you. Because of this, the estimated variable cost is presented as an hourly figure, which is how much extra the aircraft will cost you per flight hour. There are four factors that we have built into the hourly variable cost figure. 4:50 - Fuel Fuel costs are a significant hourly expense when operating a private plane. Of course, the amount of fuel that the aircraft burns per hour will vary greatly depending on its average hourly consumption. Of course, depending on location, fuel prices vary dramatically. 5:18 - Maintenance The second is Maintenance. In order to ensure that aircraft are safe to fly they require maintenance at regular intervals. These intervals are scheduled and dependent on the manufacturer's guidelines. Maintenance is scheduled based on the number of hours flown. 6:04 - Engine Overhaul The third is Engine Overhaul. An engine overhaul is a more serious scheduled event that is essentially the maintenance and inspection of the engine. Again, much like maintenance of the airframe, the more an engine is used, the more wear and tear it will experience. Therefore, the more hours flown the more often an engine overhaul will need to be performed. 6:29 - Crew, Landing, and Handling Fees The fourth and final one is Fees for Crew, Landing, and Handling. Crew fees are those that you need to pay the crew during an extended stay. Secondly, when landing at an airport, aircraft are charged a landing fee, which is usually based on the weight of the aircraft. And finally, handling fees go hand in hand with landing fees. The 100th Pilatus PC-24 LX-PCE is seen taking-off in extreme winter weather. Heavy snowfall, gusting winds, freezing temperatures and very low visibility hits Bern in Switzerland. Pilatus aircraft withstand every type of weather and bear any temperature. In the background, a PC-12 is seen taking-off while the PC-24 is waiting at the holding point. The super versatile jet has even off road capabilities and can easily operate from unpaved and very short runways. The first medevac-equipped PC-24 was handed over to our loyal customer of many years, the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS Western Operations) in November 2018. It landed on Australian soil for the first time on 2 December, in Broome. Configured especially for patient transport, this PC-24 was developed in close consultation with the RFDS to fully meet the latter’s needs. Handed over in November 2018, it is in service with the Western Australia section from the base in Broome. A second PC-24 is based in Perth-Jandakot. 2019 will also see the first PC-24 go into service with the fleet operated by the Central Australian section in Adelaide.
