F-Zero X (N64) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Nintendo's 1998 racing game for the Nintendo 64, F-Zero X. F-Zero X is the direct sequel to the hit SNES launch title F-Zero, released back in 1991. Seven years is a long time to wait for a sequel, especially to a game as well loved as F-Zero was, but true-to-form, Nintendo didn't leave fans disappointed. Just as F-Zero was a showcase piece for the SNES emphasizing speed above all else, F-Zero X is an insanely fast feeling game that highlights just what the N64 can deliver for a white-knuckle driving experience. The game features several gameplay modes - there is the classic championship, a battle mode, versus races, and a time trial mode. The real meat of the title is in the championship game ("GP Mode"), where you'll battle it out across four different cups, each comprised of six races. As you clear the cups, you'll unlock tons of new cars, a new difficulty level, and the "X Cup" which features sets of courses randomly generated on the fly. The racing action makes a fair number of changes to F-Zero's formula, making for a much deeper experience than before. In addition to being able to tweak your car's handling, full analogue control provides much more precision in steering, and the addition of enhanced grip and drift mechanics allow for an entirely different experience between games depending on your preferred driving style and car choices. I said before that F-Zero X is fast, and truly, there haven't been many games since that can match its sense of speed. The scenery flies by at breakneck speed, and this makes being able to accurately gauge your speed and angle quickly a priority as you zoom through corners. Combine this with an aggressive AI on the higher levels, and you also get one of the hardest racing games around. The master class difficulty level couldn't have been more aptly named. But this is a huge part of the appeal. Learning the cars and the tracks takes time, but as you begin to improve, you'll be motivated to keep on pushing yourself to place just a bit better with each try. Learning when you should drift or when to wipe out an opponent instead of blasting past them in order to shave a few tenths of a second from a lap time becomes a real focal point, and provides a lot of motivation to keep coming back again and again. Most critics picked on the game's visuals when it was released, and screenshots don't do the game any justice. Granted, the tracks and cars are largely featureless, and there isn't much detail to be found in any scene, but this was a compromise made to get the game running at a locked 60 fps. It was a good compromise to make - while the game is often very plain to look at (and outright ugly at times), everything moves so fast and is so smooth that you won't have time to notice when you're playing. Playablility was emphasized over good looks, and it absolutely feels like this was the right call to make. The sound fares better: though the samples all sound highly compressed thanks to the limited storage space in the cartridge, the wailing guitars all make for an excellent accompaniment to the action, and the updated mixes of classic F-Zero tracks sound awesome. I could've done without the annoying, creepy announcer though. F-Zero X is yet another example of how well Nintendo understood how to make the transition from 2D to 3D while keeping the spirit of a original game intact. The sense of speed, satisfying sense of progression, and the unique track designs all make for an excellent sequel that will keep anyone that loved the first game busy for quite long time. F-Zero X (N64)

This video was captured using the actual game on an actual Nintendo 64. A few failures to complete races have been removed for your consideration and enjoyment. This is the legendary F-Zero X. Legendary because this installment is thought by many to be the greatest F-Zero of the entire franchise. While I do think that it is great, I actually think that award goes to the Gamecube version F-Zero GX. But this video is on F-Zero X. F-Zero X was not as widely praised as it is now days. When this was released, game magazines like EGM dogged it by saying that the graphics were too plain and dull. Obviously nobody cared what they thought because F-Zero fans could see right through that line of BS. The first F-Zero was really fast and really smooth. F-Zero X was twice as fast and twice as smooth. How fast and smooth? 60 frames per second. Yes, the framerate that the consoles of today struggle to keep was this game's constant. Not only that but the A.I. was more brutal than ever. To even this out, F-Zero X featured shunting and spinning attacks to bite back at the brutal A.I. This was also the first installment to give you boost at the expense of your energy meter. You could boost your meter down to nothing and then pray for a recharge strip, or use it sparingly. Your choice, but boosting more often wins races while boosting less often ensures that you finish the race. I'm in it to win it so I boost constantly. The controls were tighter than ever and the racing is absolutely frenetic. The music again is legendary. It's weird how many N64 games suffered from muffled sound and music due to the low sampling rates in order to optimize the limited storage of cartridges, but this game suffered with none of that. All the sound effects are crystal clear and the music is CD quality. No, Nintendo did nothing wrong with this game. With 30 A.I. opponents trying to knock you off the track at break neck speeds, the only people who wanna talk trash about this game simply just suck at it. This game is just absolute greatness in physical form.

In this futuristic racer, the key to winning is speed! F-Zero X will become available for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members on March 11! Choose from 30 different hover-car racers, including updated versions of the Blue Falcon and other vehicles from the original F-Zero™ game, and get ready to hit the acceleration! Race to the finish line on tracks that twist and turn through the air. However, you will have to avoid the other 29 cars on the track or else face the consequences! If you're in a competitive mood, try to win a Grand Prix Cup, get the fastest lap time in a Time Trial, or destroy the competition in a Death Race. You can also challenge three friends in the Versus mode. With five separate play modes, hidden vehicles and courses, and an excellent soundtrack, F-Zero X is a worthy racing title to return to! F-Zero X N64 Jack Cup master 60fps

Best viewed in 60 fps (only available on HTML5 player). While I'm not particularly good at F-Zero X, it should still be noted that this game was made for an N64 joystick, and I find it harder to play on the emulator because I'm using an Xbox 360 controller joystick. I didn't care about the ranking in individual races as long as I came in first in the total score.

The Aggression of F-Zero X's combat

The jump from SNES to N64 brought up some incredible changes to F-Zero, a lot that has lasted to this day. But I want to dive in a little with the combat. Side attacking and spin attacking. Not in terms of using them for speedy exploits, but rather...in the art of aggression. And fittingly, we will be using Pico with the Wild Goose. #fzero #fzero30 #fzerotopics #Pico

Intro: 0:00 Jack Cup: 0:17 Queen Cup: 16:20 King Cup: 31:49 Joker Cup: 48:50 Credits: 1:08:07 F-Zero X is a futuristic racing video game for the Nintendo 64 (N64) console. Developed by Nintendo's EAD division, it was released in Japan, North America, and Europe in 1998. In 2000, an expansion pack was exclusively released in Japan providing numerous extra features not in the original game. F-Zero X was ported in 2004 to the iQue Player in China. The game was re-released on the Wii Virtual Console in Japan, Europe and in North America, in 2007. To honor the 100th Virtual Console release in Europe, it became available on June 15. It was a sequel to the original 1990 F-Zero game, and is the first F-Zero installment to have featured 3D graphics. The game has a steep learning curve and its gameplay experience is similar to that of the original F-Zero game. F-Zero X introduced a "death race" mode and a random track generator called the "X Cup". In the death race, the player's objective is to annihilate the 29 other racers as speedily as possible, while the X-Cup "creates" a different set of tracks each time played. Critics generally praised F-Zero X for its fast gameplay, abundance of courses and vehicles, track design, and maintaining a high framerate. However, the game has been widely criticized for its lack of graphical detail.

Best viewed in 60 fps (only available on HTML5 player). While I'm not particularly good at F-Zero X, it should still be noted that this game was made for an N64 joystick, and I find it harder to play on the emulator because I'm using an Xbox 360 controller joystick. F-Zero X Speed Run: Grand Prix Master Class beaten with Blue Falcon [Ultra HDMI]

this ship is just a duplicate of Super Piranha in about everything except for the fact it's got an extra 250Kg of weight due to carrying a Falcon Punch inside. overall it's a very balanced machine towards beginners. should be good enough to learn how to drive. towards the advanced side it falls short since it doesn't excel at anything. an interesting fact is that this ship held track WRs in some tracks in the game a long time ago. i'm using the combined FZX + EK rom that has the newest english translation. it works perfectly using a 64Drive flash cart. if you want it, you can find it at: 🤍 i took this chance to start a new save file here and complete Master with every ship since i want a save fully completed done by me. the game itself plays exactly the same as the regular cart + disk version. i'm using an N64 with the UltraHDMI video mod installed. this lets me record the best possible quality from console and play well in a modern TV. [TAS] F-Zero X: Silence 1 - 0'57"962

EDIT: Full Jack Cup TAS here: 🤍 Initially, this was going to be a small update to the TAS where I just optimise the DTDs and skip a few boost-plates to save a tiny amount of time...then the first lap happened. Ultimately, I'm think I ended up saving ~0"15 with the new first lap which is...actually a good amount for Silence 1, but still not quite as much as I hoped it would be. Still, it was just enough to get me the sub 58 so I guess I shouldn't be complaining :) Since I ended up losing some energy by landing on the rail, I had to omit a boost in the 2nd lap, which actually turned out alright since it was a boost that heavily overlapped into a DTD. Old splits: 25"522, 18"289, 14"643 = 58"454 New splits: 25"699, 17"738, 14"525 = 57"962 Difference: +0"177, -0"551, -0"118 = -0"492 Re-records: 4,858... plus ~200-400 from the recycled first lap. 9,164 total re-records (previous TAS + current TAS). I found (what I believe is) the optimal strat while playing with a controller at 15% speed, then I optimised all of the movements using the TAS input plugin and frame advance. *boink* 🤍 TAS history: 0'58"454 by me: 🤍 0'59"757 by Lord Tom: 🤍 0'59"842 by JKT: 🤍
